Ethnography investigates social phenomena by observing in its natural environment ("natural setting"). The researcher takes part in the everyday life of the target group for a certain period of time. Overall, however, ethnography is described inconsistently in the literature.


The method is used to try to gain insights that allow conclusions to be drawn for a specific purpose. In software production, for example, usability is an important factor. For example, a button may be placed at a suboptimal position, and only through observation does it become clear that the user feels it is more optimal at another position.
